Tucson, Ariz. – Some teams like to cut things a little close on the way to the USTA League Championships.
This August, the USTA Southern California Section Adult Women’s 4.0 team from Laguna Niguel, Calif., was scheduled to play its third-round sectional match at 7:30 a.m., but something interesting happened.
"We showed up at the wrong courts," said team captain Stacey Mazurek. "Then (we) had to make a mad dash to our cars and careen across town to arrive at the correct tennis courts with only minutes to spare."
Despite having to rush to arrive on time, the Laguna Niguel team was victorious and went on to capture the USTA Southern California Sectional Championship.
"The comedy of errors worked out in the end because we managed to win that match in spite of our court mix-up," Mazurek said. "The early morning excitement must have got our blood pumping."
The reward for their Sectional victory was a trip to Tucson for the 2010 USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships.
The Southern California women’s team is a diverse group that features many different backgrounds. There are players from New Jersey, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and even Indonesia. However, the one common bond is their love of tennis and playing as a team.
"We are excited to be competing at the USTA Nationals and look forward to bringing the Southern California spirit to Tucson, Ariz.," Mazurek said.
