Todd Martin began serving as a Director at Large on the USTA Board of Directors in October 2011. One of three elite athletes on the board, he is the Board Liaison to the Pro Tennis Council and a member of the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic Team Events Committee. Martin is also the Honorary Chair of the Sportsmanship Committee, a position he assumed in January 2011.

 

A standout professional, Martin ascended to a career-best No. 4 in the world and reached the final of the 1999 US Open and the 1994 Australian Open. He also reached the semifinals on two other occasions at both the US Open and Wimbledon. In his career, Martin won 411 matches, eight singles titles and five doubles titles; was named the ATP’s Most Improved Player in 1993; won its Sportsmanship Award in 1993 and 1994; and was President of ATP Players Council for eight of the 14 years he played professionally. Martin was also a mainstay of the U.S. Davis Cup team, competing each year from 1994 to 2002, posting a 16-14 overall record and helping the team to the Davis Cup championship in 1995. He also represented the U.S. at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, in 2000.

 

Martin retired following the 2004 US Open but remains active in tennis. He has competed on the Outback Champions Tour, finishing ranked No. 1 in 2007, and has coached Top 10 players Mardy Fish and Novak Djokovic. He is currently Managing Partner of Todd Martin Tennis and serves as the Touring Professional at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

 

In 1994, Martin founded the Todd Martin Development Fund (TMDF), which provides tennis, education and leadership programs for at-risk youth of mid-Michigan. TMDF currently operates as both an NJTL and a USTA First Serve chapter. 

 

Martin grew up in Lansing, Mich., where he was the state high school champion. He subsequently attended Northwestern University, playing varsity tennis for two seasons (1988-89, 89-90). Martin was the Big Ten Rookie of the Year in 1989. During his sophomore campaign in 1990, he led the Wildcats to a Big Ten championship and earned All-America and Big Ten Player of the Year honors, finishing the year ranked No. 2 in the nation. 

 

Martin was inducted into the Northwestern University Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Intercollegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007. He was also inducted into the USTA Midwest Hall of Fame in 2008 as well as to the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Martin and his wife, Amy, reside in Ponte Vedra Beach with their three children, Jack, Cash and Gwen. Martin is a member of the USTA Florida Section.
