Cheers from Timaru, New Zealand! It took us so long to get here, but so worth the trip.
Let me first introduce myself and my team. I am Mary Beth Williams, from Harrisburg, Pa., and I am the captain of the Women’s 35s team. Trish Riddell (Orlando, Fla.), Carolina Blouin (Raleigh, N.C.) and Patricia Zerdan (Dallas, Tx.) are my teammates. We are playing at the ASB Tennis Centre which overlooks Caroline Bay, and feeds off the Pacific (I’ve missed the beach).
We just finished our first day of matches. We played a friendly Australian team. Carolina played #2 singles and won 6-4, 7-5. Patricia was flawless at #1, winning 6-0, 6-0. Then Trish and I sealed the deal, winning 6-2, 6-2. And can you believe that the Aussies had the nerve to play Aussie against me?! The Lancaster, Pa. crew knows why.
The people in Timaru are so happy to have us here and have been most accommodating. We were entertained yesterday at the Opening Ceremony with a native Maori dance and some local fare. We are looking forward to doing some sightseeing if the weather holds up – I’ve heard that the little blue penguins are adorable, but bungee jumping is out of the question.
Before I go I have to send out some shoutouts (I know I’m dating myself). I wouldn’t be here without the love and support of my biggest fans: Robert, Jacquie and Jasmine! Trish says "Thanks Mom!" Patricia wants to thank Max, Sue and Marianela. And last but not least Carolina says "Dad, I was NOT crazy to leave husband and 3 kids behind!’
Tomorrow we will play Luxembourg.
