The USTA Middle States Section men from Westfield, N.J. and the USTA Southern Section women from Memphis, Tenn., captured national championships at the 2010 USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships, held Oct. 15-17, at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The Middle States men defeated a squad from the USTA Hawaii Section, 4-1 in the final, after defeating a team from the USTA Caribbean Section in the semifinal round.
The Middle States team is captained by Mike Rao and features Frank Osolnick, Phani Saraswatula, Jason Li, Yihaur Steve Lu, Michael King, Luis Rivera, Joshua Suri, Rich Liu and Igor Shames and plays at the Westfield Indoor Tennis.
The Caribbean section team from Bayamon, P.R., picked up third place with a 5-0 victory over the USTA Northern Section entrant from Twin Cities, Minn.
On the women’s side, the Southern team defeated a USTA Northern California Section squad from Johnson Ranch, Calif., by a 4-1 margin in the championship match. In the semifinals, the Southern team downed a USTA Eastern Section team from Westchester County, N.Y., 4-1.
The Southern team is captained by Sherrie Cox and features Teresa Sokol, Catherine Williamson, Lynn O’Neill, Stephanie Wright, Kristin Hicks, Jacqueline Trobee, Melissa Hanshew and Michelle Tipton and plays out of Collierville Park and Recreation.
Third place went to a USTA Southern California Section team from El Monte, which defeated the Eastern squad, 3-2 in the consolation match.
