World No. 1 Novak Djokovic takes on Olympus US Open Series Los Angeles and Atlanta semifinalist Ryan Harrison in the first Center Court night match on Wednesday.
Caroline Wozniacki, the World No. 1 on the women’s side, opens up play on the Grandstand against American Christina McHale.
Meanwhile, former No.1s 10-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, 13-time Grand Slam titlist Serena Williams, 2008 French Open winner Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic are also in action.
For reigning Wimbledon champion Djokovic, the second round match against Harrison begins his campaign for the Cincinnati title that has eluded him twice. A runner-up in ’09 and ’08, the No. 1 seed is fresh off winning Montreal over top-ranked American Mardy Fish.
Wozniacki, who made her professional debut in Cincinnati just eight days after her 15th birthday, heads the women’s draw as the top seed. The 17-time Tour Titlist starts against New Jersey-native McHale, 19, who reached the Charleston quarterfinals earlier this year, in the second round.
Nadal, last year’s US Open winner, takes on France’s Julien Benneteau to kick off his Cincinnati campaign. The Spaniard reached the semifinals here twice in ’09 and ’08, falling to Djokovic both times.
Williams, who comes off a win in Toronto over Samantha Stosur, faces the Australian for the second time in less than a week. The American currently tops the Olympus US Open Series with 170 points after taking Toronto and Stanford earlier this summer.
Former Serbian world No. 1s Ivanovic and Jankovic also play Wednesday. While Ivanovic faces 2011 College Park champion Nadia Petrova, ’09 Cincinnati champion Jankovic takes on China’s Zheng Jie.
