Maria Sharapova won her debut in Cincinnati on Tuesday night, claiming a 6-4 1-6 6-2 victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam champion, broke Kuznetsova in the ninth game of the opening set.
Kuznetsova, who was just two days removed from a title at the Olympus US Open Series tournament in San Diego, stormed back to take the second set in just 30 minutes.
The third set opened with a long game in which Sharapova fought through four deuces before registering the hold. She quickly broke Kuznetsova then held to love to race to a 3-0 lead. Sharapova then closed out the match with another break of Kuznetsova’s serve.
The defending champion Jankovic won the first set with relative ease in just over 30 minutes. She opened the second set with a break of serve, but Dushevina immediately broke back. Dushevina broke Jankovic in the eighth game of the second set, then served it out to force a deciding third set. After a heat break between the second and third set, Jankovic rolled through the third set 6-1.
