Two-time Cincinnati winner Andy Roddick and ’08 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic begin their 2011 campaign for the title tonight under the lights on Center Court. Ryan Harrison, who’s been having a breakthrough summer this year, also headlines tonight’s match-ups on the Grandstand against the veteran Juan Ignacio Chela.
Roddick, who won the singles titles in ’03 and ’06, will face Philipp Kohlschrieber of Germany under the lights. With a win, he’ll join fellow American and ’06 Cincinnati finalist James Blake, a winner last night, into the second round.
In their career head-to-head, Roddick leads the German with four wins and one loss. They last met in Shanghai where Kohlschrieber retired due to injury trailing 6-3, 2-1.
Former World No.1 Ivanovic, who reached the semifinals here last year, starts her 2011 Cincinnati tournament against the American Glatch, who reached the Memphis quarterfinals earlier this year. The two have never met in competitive play.
Olympus US Open Series Los Angeles and Atlanta semifinalist Harrison, who threw the first pitch at yesterday afternoon’s Reds game, plays Chela of Argentina, a six-time Tour titlist. In their careers, the two have never met.
Daniela Hantuchova, who reached the ’09 Cincinnati quarterfinals, faces this year’s Bogota champion Lourdes Dominguez Lino on court three. Ranked as high as World No. 5 in ’03, Hantuchova won Pattaya City earlier this year in the first night on Court 3.
