MASON, Ohio (August 11, 2018) - Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2018 Western & Southern Open with a right knee injury.

“I’m really sorry that I have to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati,” Williams said. “It’s one of my favorite stops on the WTA Tour and the fans are always amazing there. I will miss not being able to play in front of my home supporters but look forward to hopefully returning in 2019.”

Williams’s spot in the draw will taken by Naomi Osaka, who becomes the No. 17 seed. Osaka’s position in the draw will be filled by a qualifier or lucky loser following the conclusion of play on Sunday.

Prior to the making of the draw, four other WTA players withdrew: Mihaela Buzarnescu (right ankle), Dominika Cibulkova (illness), Maria Sharapova (right shoulder) and Zhang Shuai (left knee).
