CINCINNATI (August 10, 2013) -- Wildcard Ryan Harrison starts off with the first night match of the Western & Southern Open when he takes on Ukraine’s Alexander Dolgopolov on Sunday night.
Harrison, who is based in Austin, Texas, comes into this event having reached the semifinals of the BB&T Atlanta Open, where he fell to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson. Harrison received a wildcard into the main draw along with Brian Baker, Jack Sock, and James Blake.
The Harrison-Dolgopolov match will be followed by doubles between the Spanish team of Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo and Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau. Tecau won the doubles title in 2012 with partner Robert Lindstedt.
Sunday will also feature the conclusion of the qualifying draws. The remainder of the field will compete to fill the 19 spots – 12 for the women’s draw and 7 for the men’s – set aside for qualifiers in each of the main draws.
This qualifying group includes former Top 10 player Andrea Petkovic, who will play Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, Atlanta’s Robby Ginepri, who will face off against Belgian David Goffin, and two-time Grand Slam doubles titleist Vania King, who will battle Romania’s Monica Niculescu.
Along with King and Ginepri, there are a few other Americans vying for a place in the main draw. Steve Johnson plays fellow American Mackenzie McDonald, and Michael Russell, Allison Riske, Shelby Rogers and Tim Smyczek are all still in contention.
The Western & Southern Open runs from August 10 through August 18, 2013.
