While more than 70 players took the court today in the hopes of qualifying for the Western & Southern Open main draw, some of the world’s best snuck on to the practice courts to get in their first hits of the 2014 tournament.
2013 finalist John Isner kicked off Saturday practice at the Lindner Family Tennis Center with countryman and friend Sam Querrey. Isner will face fellow tall man Kevin Anderson in the first round of play. Querrey received a wild card in to the tournament and is set to take on Alejandro Falla on Sunday night.
World No.4 Stan Wawrinka arrived back in Cincinnati for his 8th W&S Open sporting his ‘Stan the Man’ shirt, while World No.5 Tomas Berdych tamed down his normally vibrant wardrobe for his practice session today. Both men have a bye in their first round, so they are automatically through to the second round of the tournament.
The male fans at the tennis center flocked to watch former World No.1 Ana Ivanovic hit the practice courts. Ivanovic just recently made her way back in to the WTA Top 10, just in time for her return to Cincinnati. She is set to play Sorana Cirstea in the first round.
Former champion Maria Sharapova also made her way to the tennis center today, spending nearly two hours on the practice court. The 2014 French Open Champion and No.5 seed received a bye in the first round, so she is straight through to round two at the W&S Open.
