On a day that saw former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, the 2011 runner-up and 2009 Cincinnati champion, lose in a three-set marathon to China's Shuai Peng in just under three hours during the night session on Center Court, ten other women’s singles matches took place at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

 

Peng, a quarterfinalist at the Western & Southern Open last year, next faces the winner of American qualifier Madison Keys and Italy's Roberta Vinci in the next round.

 

Wild card Camila Giorgi, who recently advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon, upset the No. 14 seed Francesca Schiavone for one of the biggest wins of the tournament so far. She defeated her compatriot, who won the 2010 French Open title, in straight sets.

 

Securing one of the first results of the day, the German Mona Barthel, a titlist at Hobart this year, defeated Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 6-0, 6-4. Barthel needed just over an hour to take out the Spaniard in her Cincinnati debut.

 

Julia Goerges, who struck the fastest recorded serve of the year for the women at 126.1mph while playing at Roland Garros, defeated Israel’s Shahar Peer in straight sets on Center Court. Although she struck her first serve less than 40 percent of the time, the German out-aced her opponent four-to-one in a match that lasted a little past the one-hour mark.

 

Others advancing to the second round are qualifier Eleni Daniilidou of Greece over Vania King of the United States, Johanna Larsson of Sweden, Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, and Timea Babos of Hungary, who beat the American Varvara Lepchenko 7-6(4), 6-4.
