SAN DIEGO – The team event has been completed and now it’s time for the 2012 International Tennis Federation Seniors World Individual Championships to take center stage.
Tournament director Bill Kellogg gave a warm San Diego welcome to the players during Sunday evening’s opening ceremony, which took place at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in the Ford Building at Balboa Park.
More than 700 players from 32 countries are entered in the international tennis event, which features singles, doubles and mixed doubles in the men’s and women’s 35s, 40s, 45s, 50s and 55s age divisions.
"It is going to be an absolutely fantastic week of international senior tennis with the best players in the world playing in San Diego," said Kellogg, who also serves as President of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. "After a very successful week with the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, we look forward to hosting these individual championships."
Despite several early morning rain showers on Sunday, the tournament began as scheduled with singles action in the Men’s 45, Men’s 50 and Men’s 55 divisions taking place. The tournament continues through Sunday, February 19.
The 32nd ITF Seniors World Individual Championships will be played at the following locations:
- Men’s 50s, 55s; Women’s 45s and Mixed Doubles 45s – La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club & La Jolla Tennis Club, La Jolla, Calif.
- Men’s 35s, 40s; Women’s 35s and Mixed Doubles 35s – La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, Calif.
- Men’s 45s, Women’s 40s and Mixed Doubles 40s – Morgan Run Club & Resort, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
- Women’s 50s, 55s and Mixed Doubles 50s, 55s – San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club, San Diego, Calif.
