The No.1 seed Roger Federer advanced to the round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open on a day that saw the top three men win. In his match played in front of a full Center Court, Federer defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia in straight sets. Upon his victory, the Swiss was treated to a standing ovation from the crowd.

 

After winning, Federer said, "It was a quick match, a good one for me. I served well." He continued, "I was able to play some good points on the offensive, and overall I'm very pleased because I don't know Bogomolov that well."

 

Earlier in the day, World No. 2 Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round at the Western & Southern Open after coming through a tough test from Italy’s Andreas Seppi in the first set. He defeated his opponent 7-6(4), 6-2 in his first match since taking the title in Montreal last week.

 

In 90 minutes, the 2011 runner-up at the Lindner Family Tennis Center claimed a meeting with former Top Five talent Nikolay Davydenko of Russia.

 

About the win, Djokovic said he was "not very satisfied with the performance." He continued, "I will have to play much better than I did today in order to go far."

 

Defending Cincinnati champion and the No. 3 seed Andy Murray also won on Center Court to get to the round of 16. He took out American wild card Sam Querrey 6-2, 6-4 face lucky loser Jeremy Chardy, who upset Andy Roddick on Tuesday.

 

Murray expressed optimism after the win. "I was very sharp right at the beginning of the match," he said. "I needed to be, and it was a good start to the tournament."

 

Another American wild card, James Blake, tested the No. 14 seed Kei Nishikori to take the first set. He dropped the next two, however, to give the top-ranked Japanese player a pass into the next round.

 

Qualifier Jesse Levine joined Blake with a loss on Wednesday, succumbing to the No. 12 seed Marin Cilic 7-5, 7-6(6) in a closely contested match. Pablo Andujar faces Cilic next after taking out the No. 7 Janko Tipsarevic, who failed to advance after retiring while trailing 6-4, 4-1.

 

The No. 6 seed Juan Martin del Potro, the Olympics bronze medalist over Djokovic in London, also advanced to the third round. He beat the 34-year old German Tommy Haas in straight sets. The 2009 US Open champion will face Viktor Troicki, a winner over former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt earlier in the day, in his next match.

 

Set to play the No. 6 seed Tomas Berdych in the third round is Canada’s Milos Raonic, a winner over former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis in three sets.
