Fathers and Sons at the Western & Southern Open

August 18, 2022 02:51 PM

Two players on court today are extending their family legacies at the Western & Southern Open. The dads of Sebastian Korda, 22, and Ben Shelton,19, both competed here in the '90s. Petr Korda played the Western & Southern Open nine times and twice reached the quarterfinals, a mark Sebastian will try to equal today. When Sebastian won a title last year, the Kordas became the third father-son duo to win tour-level titles in the Open Era.

Shelton’s father, Bryan, twice played the Western & Southern Open, including a 1993 match against top seed Pete Sampras. He won two singles titles on the ATP Tour, so he and Ben will be aiming to become the fourth father-son duo to win ATP titles. Ben,19, is on his way - he upset world No. 5 Casper Ruud yesterday. Ben won the NCAA singles title in May for the University of Florida  - where his father is the coach. Family legacies all around!
