The Bryan Brother are back and looking to claim their fourth title at the Western & Southern Open.
CINCINNATI (August 10, 2013) -- Mike and Bob Bryan are back in Cincinnati to vie for the Western & Southern Open Men’s Doubles Title. The pair, who sits at the top of the ATP Rankings list, are the top seeds at this tournament held August 12-18, 2013 in Mason, Ohio.
The Bryans, originally from Southern California, have had major success at the Western & Southern Open: they have won this event three times and reached the finals in three other occasions. In 2012, they lost in the semifinals to eventual champions Robert Lindstedt of Sweden and Horia Tecau of Romania.
Two American teams received wildcards into the doubles draw: Brian Baker, returning to play after recovering from an injury sustained earlier this year, will partner with Rajeev Ram. James Blake and former college standout Steve Johnson are also entered in the tournament. These two teams will face each other in the first round, with the winner playing the Bryans in the second.
The Spanish pair of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, the reigning ATP World Tour Final Champions, is seeded second, and will play the winner of the battle between Mardy Fish and Jurgen Melzer and the team of Jarkko Nieminen and Gilles Simon.
Third seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares head into Cincinnati with an amazing 2013 so far: the pair took titles at Eastbourne, Barcelona, and Sao Paolo, and reached the finals of Hamburg, Queen’s Club, and Madrid. Their opponents will either be the Spanish team of Feliciano Lopez and Tommy Robredo or Max Mirnyi and Tecau.
The rest of the eight seeds in the 24-team draw (in order of seeding) are Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek; Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julian Rojer; defending champion Lindstedt and partner Daniel Nestor; Frenchman Julien Benneteau playing with Serbia’s Nenad Zimonjic; and the team of Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin. All 8 seeded teams have received byes for the first round.
The Western & Southern Open is an ATP Masters 1000-level event, and is one of the tournaments that compose the Emirates U.S. Open Series, a five-week season that links nine North American hard-court events to the final major of the year, the U.S. Open.
