Best Bites from Wednesday

World No. 2 Naomi Osaka along with Wednesday milestone makers Casper Ruud and Gael Monfils spoke to the media. Here are some of the best quotes from the day:

Naomi Osaka on the developing rivalry with Coco Gauff…

“I think as a person she's really amazing. She's super lovely. When I took time off from the French (Open) and Wimbledon, she sent me really nice messages. I was very appreciative of that. I know that she's an amazing person and I feel like everyone can sense that as well. That's why she's able to draw big crowds. That's why there are little kids cheering her on. For me, as her opponent, I really love that atmosphere and seeing so many people being engaged in the match is really nice. I'm excited when I hear that it's a rivalry. I think rivalries build the sport. Federer/Nadal definitely did amazing things for tennis. It would be amazing to have something like that on the women's side.”

Gael Monfils on obtaining his 500th win...

“To be honest, just before coming (to Cincinnati), I didn't really know that I was that close. If you think about it, it's a big number. It's been a lot of wins over the years, and then, as I say, when I started I never thought I’d be at that amount of wins.”

Casper Ruud on collecting his 100th win…

“It’s a very fun milestone to achieve. It's not something I was aware of too much until after the match today. It's not like I'm counting all the wins at all times, but it's a very, very nice achievement. I'm still young. Hopefully if I can win 100 more would be nice, obviously, but that's part of the sport. There is no

guarantee. But I will do everything I can, of course. The next years will be exciting to see what I can do.

Hopefully, I can also get to 200. But my 100 first wins have been all very nice, and I have good memories from all of them.”

John Isner on fueling off the crowd’s energy…

“I really think the crowd helped me a lot. There was a time in the second set where I was pretty tired out there and wasn’t feeling too great. But I also know that’s when I’m most dangerous, too...Even if I’m sort of dragging out there, I can at least keep the match even and just give myself a chance. That’s what I did today, and the crowd helped me a lot. It was a good match. I’m very happy with how I competed and of course happy to get the win.”
