Around the Grounds: Finals Sunday

Will the Bryan Brothers capture another W&S Open Title?

Good morning from the Lindner Family Tennis Center! It’s finals day and while it’s hard to believe that the Western &Southern Open is wrapping up for another year, it’s been another successful run. Thank you for attending and posting your pictures on our social media channels, thanks for the volunteers who make this tournament run so smoothly, and of course, thanks to our world-class players who bring the best in tennis to Mason. It’s been a great experience, and thanks to everyone who helps make it a special event.

Today’s finals lineup is certainly a fitting finale to the 10 days of tennis, with world Number 1 Serena Williams facing Ana Ivanovic to open action on Center Court. Williams holds a 6-1 edge in the all-time head-to-head, including a 2-1 advantage this season. The match up of Williams and Ivanovic assures the Western & Southern Open will have an 11th different champion since the WTA's return to Cincinnati 11 years ago.

Following that, will be five-time Western & Southern Open Champion Roger Federer facing David Ferrer. Five-time Federer holds a 15-0 head-to-head advantage over Ferrer in their careers. And, this will be the first men’s final at the Western & Southern to feature players over the age of 30. Federer is 33, Ferrer 32.

And don’t forget the action on Grandstand, where Bob and Mike Bryan will be looking for their 99th career doubles title and their fifth Western & Southern Open, but they’re facing the hottest, and perhaps newest, doubles team on the ATP Tour in Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil. Since teaming up for the first time at Wimbledon this year, they’ve gone 14-0 since, including the Wimbledon and Atlanta titles. The 14-0 streak is a record for a team winning before suffering their first loss.

The party continues around the grounds as well, as the Dayton International Airport music stage in the Food Court features David Rhodes Brown & His Hillbilly Harem, 12-2 p.m., and Suave, 6:30-8:30 p.m. So stay around after the action and make an evening of it at the Western & Southern Open. And while you’re here today, don’t forget to visit the ticket booth near the North Entrance to sign up for the first crack at tickets for next year’s Western & Southern Open, August 15-23, 2015!
