Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer headline the 2018 Western & Southern Open men’s draw, but you’ll want to keep an eye on these first-round matchups.
Denis Shapovalov [CAN] vs [WC] Frances Tiafoe [USA]
This should be fun. Tiafoe, 20, and Shapovalov, 19, will face each other for the second time this year after Tiafoe took out the Canadian en route to his first title this year in Delray Beach. Currently sitting at a career-high No. 41 in the world, Tiafoe is back in Cincinnati after notching the biggest win of his career here one year ago when he defeated then world No. 7 Alexander Zverev. Shapovalov, who has risen from No. 143 to No. 26 in the world since his breakthrough run in Montreal last summer, is making his Cincinnati debut.
Novak Djokovic [SRB] vs Steve Johnson [USA]
Novak Djokovic may be the reigning Wimbledon champion, but Steve Johnson has had a strong year of his own, collecting two titles in the past four months. Djokovic, a five-time Cincinnati finalist, will be facing Johnson for the first time in his career.
Andy Murray [GBR] vs Lucas Pouille [FRA]
In just his fourth tournament since returning from injury in June, Andy Murray will be looking to notch his fifth straight win over world No. 18 Lucas Pouille. A two-time champion here in Cincinnati, Murray is coming in fresh off an encouraging quarterfinal run in Washington, D.C. Can he keep it rolling?
John Isner [USA] vs Sam Querrey [USA]
Fellow Americans Isner and Querrey will be facing off for the first time since 2016. Though Querrey leads their head-to-head 5-2, 33-year-old Isner has had the season of his career, capturing titles in Miami and Atlanta and reaching the Wimbledon semifinals.
Honorable Mentions: Stan Wawrinka vs Diego Schwartzman, Kei Nishikori vs Andrey Rublev
