Rancho Mirage, Calif - The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, men from the USTA Middle States section and the Mid-Atlantic section women from Annapolis, Maryland, were crowned national league champions this weekend at the 2010 USTA League 4.0 Senior National Championships, held October 29 - October 31 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA.
The Pennsylvania men defeated the USTA Northern California section squad from Salinas, 2-1, in the final.
Team captain Jim Ketelesleger says everyone feels they have a strong team coming in, but the key to winning was figuring out "how you juggle your lineups to make it work."
In addition to Ketelesleger, the Harrisburg team includes Jenks Landis, C. Theodore Fridirici, Bruce Brandler, Chanh Nguyen, Gary Siegfried, Patrick Smith, Leo Washburn, and Terry Farley.
In the consolation match, the USTA Southern California section men out of Los Angeles defeated USTA Hawaii section men from Honolulu, 2-1.
In the women's final, the USTA Mid-Atlantic section team defeated the USTA Southern section women from Savannah, Georgia, 2-1.
It was the Annapolis team's third trip to the National Championships, and it's the first time in first place. Team co-captain Marie Rinaldi says the women never dreamed they'd win, but they had a "deep, talented team.'
The Maryland women were comprised of, in addition to Rinaldi, Hedy Brandt, Joann Mcknab, Chris Kamenoff, Betsy Wyble, Onnie Keita, Laila Cofield, Joan Williams (Co-Captain), Sandra Newman, Katherine Hare, Hiroyo Fisher, and Rose Lovelace.
The USTA Florida section women from Pensacola topped the USTA New England section women from Natick, Massachusetts, 2-1 to clinch 3rd place.
