Indian Wells, Calif. – When 64-year-old Steve Herrick of Houston found out his wife Mindy was playing in the 2010 USTA League 4.5 Senior National Championships at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, he got an idea.

Herrick, the Director of Maintenance at Houston’s Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club, decided to ride his BMW 1150 GS motorcycle from Houston all the way to California to watch his wife play tennis.

An avid motorcycle rider, Herrick has ridden motorcycles since 1976 and has put on 94,000 miles on his current bike. He has ridden in 30 states and his longest trip took him from Texas to New England.

"I needed an excuse to take a ride and this is a beautiful place to go," Herrick said as he watched his wife play on one of the courts near the main stadium. "It’s like an adventure. When you get into California and you come through the mountains, it’s just absolutely gorgeous. It’s so pretty."

Herrick’s motorcycle trip from Texas to California on Interstate 10 took two days and covered 1,485 miles. He stayed in a motel outside of El Paso overnight.

Once he got to Indian Wells, Herrick, who brought along a tent and sleeping bag, camped in Idyllwild in the nearby San Jacinto Mountains.

He has enjoyed watching the USTA Texas Section team play in the USTA Nationals this weekend. "I’m proud of the girls from Houston," he said. "They enjoyed me coming along."

Herrick’s trip in Indian Wells was extended when the USTA Texas Section 4.5 Senior Women’s team finished 3-0 in their flight and advanced to a semifinal match against the USTA New England Section.
