Joey Gratton describes himself as being a very competitive person, and has found success in various athletic endeavors. This is the second consecutive weekend in which he is competing for a championship. Last week he took part in the Super Boat International 2010 World Championships in Key West, Fla. and is now competing in this weekend’s 2010 USTA Adult League 10.0 Mixed Doubles National Championships at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.
Gratton captured his fifth career world championship last weekend in the Super Stock class of powerboat racing in Key West. His over 15 year racing resume also includes six national championships as well as having won over 50 individual circuits.
Although powerboat racing and tennis do not appear to have much in common, Gratton explained that some of the skills required for each sport intersect with each other.
"Reflexes are crucial in both sports," he explained. "My reflexes are really good from the boat races. Boat racing makes my tennis game better and tennis makes my racing better."
Gratton wrapped up his world championship powerboat race on Monday and returned home to Sarasota, Fla. where he had just two days to practice with his tennis team at the River Strand Golf and Country Club before heading to Tucson on Thursday.
While competing in Key West, Gratton kept his tennis teammates updated on his progress with boating, and also is keeping his boating teammates updated this weekend on his tennis results.
In addition to tennis and powerboat racing, Gratton also was competitive in motocross in his younger years. He specialized in Supercross races, where he was a top 10 ranked racer and took part in various outdoor championships.
"All I’ve done is compete for all of my life," he said. "I’m an adrenaline junkie, and am super hyper and full of energy."
Currently, Gratton is semi-retired and is enjoying being able to continue traveling the country to compete in the sports that he loves.
"I get to meet a lot of great people," he said. "I also get to travel to amazing places with both sports, and have loved these experiences."
