MASON – Five seeds were the victims of upsets on Saturday in the opening round of qualifying for the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open.

The top two seeds, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Yaroslava Shvedova, both advanced without dropping a set while third set Yanina Wickmayer needed three sets to advance.

Varvana Lepchenko recorded the biggest upset of the day, defeating No. 5 seed Jarmila Groth in straight sets. Galina Voskobeva took out the No. 7 seed Julie Coin in three sets.

Americans Jill Craybas and Shenay Perry were two of the unseeded winners on the day, and join fellow American No. 12 seed Melanie Oudin in the next round.

Michaella Krajicek got into the qualifying draw as an alternate and opened her match with a break against fourth seed Tathiana Garbin, however she had to retire with a wrist injury after the first game.

In addition, the first round qualifying match between Abigail Spears and Urszula Radwanska was pushed back to Sunday for travel reasons.
