MASON – Serena Williams, the winner of three of the last four Grand Slams, made an quick start to her 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, taking just 61 minutes to down Kateryna Bondarenko 6-3 6-2.

Williams, who reached the Cincinnati semifinals in 2006, fired 13 aces in the match, compared to none for Bondarenko.

“I’ve been working on my serve,” Williams said after the match. “I was really disappointed at Stanford in how I served. I felt like I hadn't been serving well in practice, so I definitely didn't expect to hit that many aces today.”

Williams advances to the third round where she’ll face Sybille Bammer. That match will be the third contested after noon on Center Court on Thursday.

The second seed, Williams is one of the nine players from the Top 10 of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour to have reached the third round in Cincinnati.
