Venus Cruises as Other Seeds Battle

MASON – In her Cincinnati debut, third seed Venus Williams cruised to a 6-2 6-2 win over qualifier Olga Govortsova on Tuesday night at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open.

Williams needed just 66 minutes to advance, which was considerably shorter than it took the other two seeds who were playing their second round matches Tuesday.

The third seeded Williams fired eight aces and never faced a break point in the match. She won 21 of her 23 first serve point.

“It was good to get a win,” Williams. “I thought I played really consistently and served really well.  Technically I was happy with my game, so I actually feel happy.”

Preceding Williams onto the court was the reigning French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova who needed over two hours and three sets to advance past Lucie Safarova.

Kuznetsova got off a fine start, winning the first set 6-3. She was due to serve at 5-6 in the second when rain stopped play. Safarova prevailed in the tie-break 7-2.

In the third set, the players exchanged breaks in the sixth and seventh games, and the Kuznetsova came out on top by winning the tie-break 7-4. The match lasted 2:18.

World No. 1 Dinara Safina also needed three sets to advance. Read about that match and other afternoon action here.

Kim Clijsters isn’t the only mom into the second round. Sybille Bammer, who has a 8-year-old daughter, defeated Jie Zheng 62 46 62.

Clijsters was in action on Tuesday in doubles with countrywoman Yanina Wickmayer. The American duo of Melanie Oudin and Shenay Perry outlasted the Belgian team 63 36 10-8.
