Querrey Topples Roddick; Sets up Hewitt Clash

August 19, 2009 08:30 PM
MASON – Sam Querrey fired 16 aces in a 7-6(11) 7-6(3) win over No. 5 Andy Roddick on Wednesday night to reach the round of 16 at the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

“Definitely one of my best wins ever,” Querrey. “Probably the best for me. You know, feels pretty good.”

In the opening set, Querrey never faced a break point, and Roddick saved both that he faced. In the tie-break, Roddick had a pair of set points, but was unable to convert, allowing Querrey to take the set.

In the second set, Roddick broke his countryman in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead, but Querrey was able to break Roddick back immediately and quickly held to level the match at 3-all.

Roddick had a chance in the 10th game on Querrey’s serve, getting a break point on the younger American’s serve that would have given Roddick the set. Querrey, however, answered with an ace.

In the tie-break, Querrey won the first four points to pull ahead and claim the match.

“I'm disappointed that I couldn't play better here in Cincinnati, which is a place that I enjoy playing,” Roddick said after the match.

Querrey moves on to face Lleyton Hewiit, who picked up a 6-3 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker on Wednesday night.

Hewitt, a two-time finalist in Cincinnati who has reached the semifinals in five of his last six appearances here, needed just 68 minutes to reach the round of 16.

Earlier on Wednesday, the top four players in the world were all winners. Read More
