August 20, 2009 06:00 PM

MASON – Rafael Nadal secured a spot in his seventh ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal of 2009 on Thursday night with a 7-5 6-2 win over Paul-Henri Mathieu in the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Nadal will face Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals after Berdych defeated qualifier Chris Guccione 6-4 6-3 on Thursday night.

Nadal fell behind early in the match, and trailed Mathieu 4-1. The Spaniard responded by winning six of the next seven games.

In the second set, Nadal continued his good form, opening up a 5-1 lead before closing out the match.

"I think in the end of the first set I played better," Nadal said. "In all the second set I was playing very well. V ery happy to be in quarterfinals and to continuing improve my tennis."

Berdych needed only 65 minutes to get past his Australian opponent, and saved the only two break points he faced in the match.

With Nadal’s win, each of Friday’s quarterfinal match ups will feature one of the top four players in the world after Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic were all winners earlier on Thursday.
