MASON – Three quarters of the quarterfinal matches are set for the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters after the six round of 16 matches were contested on Thursday afternoon. Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt were both three-set winners, setting up their 22nd career meeting.
Federer outlasted David Ferrer 3-6 6-3 6-4 in 1:42 to reach his third career quarterfinal in Cincinnati.
“I think at the beginning maybe my footwork was just a touch off,” Federer said. “After that I think got it together, you know, and started to play better and better.”
Hewitt withstood 13 aces from Sam Querrey in a 6-1 2-6 6-3 win over the American.
“I was able to play a really clean first set there,” Hewitt said. “But he obviously picked up his first serve in the second set and put me under a lot more pressure and started going for a bit more. It was a tough third set to get out of.“
The hottest player on Tour is Andy Murray, and he extended his North American winning streak to 13 while winning his seventh match in a row in Cincinnati as he downed Radek Stepanek 6-4 6-1.
“I started the match very well, serving well and not giving him any chances,” Murray said. “Then the wind picked up at the end of the first set, and he managed to break me. But I played a good game to break back.”
Murray advances to play luckly loser Julien Benneteau who defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6 6-4 7-6(4) in a match that lasted over three hours.
Benneteau is just the third lucky loser in the Open Era history of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals, joining Alex O’Brien in 1994 and Henry Bunis in 1974.
World No. 4 Novak Djokovic, the 2008 finalist, reached the quarterfinals with a 7-5 6-3 win over Jeremy Chardy.
“Overall I'm happy that -- to get a win out of this day,” Djokovic said. “It's a positive thing.”
Djokovic will face No. 9 Gilles Simon, who defeated No. 8 Nikolay Davydenko 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4 on Thursday. This is the first time Simon has advanced past the second round in Cincinnati.
Djokovic holds a 2-1 lead in all-time meetings against Simon.
