MASON – Two of the four seeds in action on opening day of the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters were upset as 11 first round matches took place on Monday afternoon.
Ivo Karlovic, a semifinalist in Cincinnati in 2008, fired 21 aces as he took out No. 13 seed
Gael Monfils 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(2). Karlovic, who is 6-foot-10, has led the ATP World Tour in aces in each of the past two years.
France’s
Jeremy Chardy took out the No. 15 seed
Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-5. Robredo was a semifinalist in Cincinnati in 2004 and 2006.
Gilles Simon of France was the highest seeded winner during the day. The ninth seed defeated American wild card
Wayne Odesnik 6-3 6-2.
Marin Cilic, the No. 14 seed, earned his first career win in Cincinnati, downing former World No. 1 and 2006 Cincinnati finalist
Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-3 6-4.
