Quarterfinals Contested Friday

MASON – The singles and doubles quarterfinals of the 2009 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters will be contested on Friday.


The day session will start at 10 a.m. on Center Court with a doubles match featuring the fourth seeded team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles against Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

At noon, World No. 2 Andy Murray continues his title defense against lucky loser Julien Benneteau. Murray has won his last 13 matches in North America, and seven in a row in Cincinnati.

Benneteau is the just the third lucky loser in the Open Era history of the tournament to reach the quarterfinals and is bidding to be the first to reach the semifinals.

Murray won their only previous meeting, at Wimbledon in 2006.  

Following that match will be the 22nd meeting between World No. 1 Roger Federer and Lleyton Hewitt. Federer has won the last 12 meetings, dating back to 2003.

In the next singles quarterfinal, World No. 4 Novak Djokovic, who was runner-up in Cincinnati last year, will take on Gilles Simon. Djokovic holds a 2-1 edge in their all-time meetings.

At 7 p.m. will be a singles match between World No. 3 Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych. Nadal leads their series 4-3, and has won the last three times they have played. In 2005, the two met in the first round in Cincinnati, with Berdych pulling out the victory in a third-set tiebreak.

Following the Nadal-Berdych match, the No. 1 seed in doubles Bob and Mike Bryan will take on the No. 7 seed, Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman.
