The 22nd annual Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament came to a close on Sunday, March 27 at the Paula G. Manship YMCA’s Lamar Tennis Center. With 104 players representing 17countries, 2011 was our biggest tournament ever! During the 5-day event, Baton Rouge played host to some of wheelchair tennis’ top players and witnessed some great tennis! The Men’s Singles winner was Nicolas Peifer of France, the Women’s Singles winner was Sharon Walraven of The Netherlands, and the Quad Singles winner was David Wagner of the USA. What a great week of exciting tennis matches!!
While the Baton Rouge Wheelchair Tennis Association was proud to host such a large draw of international players, we were also happy to highlight some local talent, including Baton Rouge’s own open player Shane Theriot and up-and-coming junior Alex Saparito who participated in his first tournament in both the Junior and Men’s C divisions.
The Cajun Classic has a reputation for good food and good ole’ Southern hospitality. From the fun and light-hearted Up/Down tournament to the Louisiana-style crawfish boil and player party, the Cajun Classic is rich in spirit and tradition. Many thanks to the volunteers and local businesses who contributed to the tournament’s success and to supporting the BRWTA’s mission of increasing the awareness of the sport of wheelchair tennis.
