It’s bonus tennis day at the Western & Southern Open, as Thursday night’s shower moves a couple of matches to Friday morning’s action, including Caroline Wozniacki finishing her match on the grandstand with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Na Li also carries over from Thursday night-her match is on Court 3 with qualifier Johanna Larsson.
Friday’s scheduled action is packed with top seeds and fan favorites, and heading the schedule is lucky loser Jeremy Chardy, who opens action on Center Court against Juan Martin Del Potro. Chardy knocked defending Western & Southern Open champion Andy Murray out of the field Thursday, and is taking advantage of his entry at the W&S to make a nice run this week.
Friday afternoon brings second seeded Novak Djokovic to Center Court against Marin Cilic, and at the same time wild card Venus Williams faces Sam Stosur at the grandstand. These two have met six times, with Venus winning five of the six. With a win, Venus would reach her first semifinal of 2012. By the way, if she wins at the Western & Southern Open, Venus would move into the Top 32, and that’s important, because next week’s rankings are used to seed the U.S. Open.
Later in the afternoon on Center Court, sister Serena will face Angelique Kerber. They’ve met only once, with Serena taking the match in straight sets at the U.S. Open. It’s been a strong couple of summers for Serena-she is 64-4 since the start of the 2011 summer hardcourt season. Also this afternoon, the Bryan Brothers will be on Court 3.
The night session on Friday will have the headline match of top men’s seed Roger Federer against former W&S Open finalist Mardy Fish on Center Court, and following that, the winner of the Wozniacki/Pavlyuchenkova match faces Petra Kvitova, the fourth seed.
That’s the tennis part of the day: Friday also is Corona Day here at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, with Corona giving away tickets to Center Court weekend sessions. Hang out at the Corona Beach House to find out how to win and enjoy the Quarterfinals at the Western & Southern Open!
