The new Rookwood Trophy
Welcome to Thursday of the Western & Southern Open, where the best in the field will be on the court throughout the day. It’s also the day where the USTA takes time out to thank its members. First, to the tennis, where Mardy Fish starts the action on center court against Radek Stepanek. Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska opens the day on the grandstand against wild card Sloane Stephens.
In fact, there are two sets of sisters on the courts in the morning: The Williams sisters both are on court during the day session, Serena on center court against qualifier Urszula Radwanska, Aga’s sister, who has made the quarterfinals or better four times this year, and Venus later in the day at the grandstand facing Sara Errani. Venus is looking for her fourth quarterfinal of the season, while Errani is the highest ranked Italian player of five now in the current 100.
Men’s top seed Roger Federer comes off his impressive opening match win Wednesday night with a late afternoon contest against Bernard Tomic. Federer has a 2-0 mark against Tomic, who is the youngest player in the draw at age 19. Federer is looking for his fifth title at the Western & Southern—he has yet to win any ATP Masters 1000 event five times.
Night session highlights include world number two Novak Djokovic against Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko. Djokovic is 5-2 against Davydenko lifetime and has won the last seven sets they’ve played. Also in the evening, Caroline Wozniacki faces Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Wozniacki is 5-0 in her career against Pavlyuchenkova, winning each matchup in straight sets.
Thursday is also a special day at the Western & Southern Open because it is USTA Member Appreciation Day, where USTA members are invited to join other members and special player guests at the hospitality tent, where they can enjoy the shade, have a bite and get their photo taken with the Western & Southern Open Center Court Rookwood Cup. It’s USTA’s way to say ‘thank you’ to its members for enjoying, and preserving the game of tennis now, and for future players.
