The Morning Line
Friday August 16, 2013
It’s another beautiful morning at the Lindner Family Tennis Center as we get ready for play at the Western & Southern Open! This reminder: Friday tickets are sold out but there is a limited number of ground passes will be available for the day. Be sure you call 513-651-0303 to check on availability before you head out. And tickets are still available for the women’s semifinals for Saturday.
Also, thanks to our fans, Thursday’s attendance of 24,935 sets a single day all time record, breaking Wednesday’s previous record! We appreciate your supporting the Western & Southern Open again this year.
Make sure you come out early again today, beat the traffic, enjoy great food and catch a special clinic sponsored by Emirates Airline, the sponsor of the US Open series. Emirates will be the host for an on-court clinic for 30 youth, led by ATP professional Brian Gottfried at 11 this morning on Court 6. In addition, Emirates Airline will make an equipment donation today to the USTA’s National Junior Tennis & Learning Program. Thanks to Emirates Airline for supporting junior tennis!
On court, it’s another great day, with Juan Martin Del Potro opening play on center court against qualifier Dmitry Tursunov, followed by top seed Novak Djokovic against American John Isner. In the last match on center court before the night session, top women’s seed Serena Williams faces Simona Halep.
On grandstand court, second seed Andy Murray faces Tomas Berdych in an afternoon battle, right after Jelena Jankovic and Roberta Vinci face off, and on Court 3 the Bryan brothers face James Blake and Steve Johnson in doubles.
The big matchup everyone is talking about now is the opener of the night session on center court, as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal face off for the 31st time in the Western & Southern Quarterfinals. Between them, they have 29 career Grand Slams and in hard court matches they are 6-6 against each other. It’s the talk of the grounds already and should be one for the ages when they face each other in the night session.
And we want to extend our condolences and thoughts to Agnieszka Radwanska and her sister Urszula. Aga withdrew from the Western & Southern Open Thursday night to be with her family for the funeral of her grandfather on Saturday. With the withdrawal, defending champion Li Na advances to the semifinal.
Again, come early for both the day and evening sessions, get a good parking space, beat the traffic and enjoy good food, music and drink before you enjoy great tennis. And we’ll see you at the Western & Southern Open!
